Sable Antelope – Sikumbi Forest, Outskirts Hwange National Park
(Classification: Hippotragus Niger)
Image Name: Spiral Guardian
As I entered the sacred Sikumi forest on the outskirts of Hwange NP early one morning, the sun’s rays filtering through the trees, the mood was one of great reverence – it felt like the forest was the custodian of mythical creatures and un whispered secrets.
Unexpectedly in the distance, movement through the trees, with ghost like silence and ethereal presence a herd of Sable antelope falling betwixt filtering golden light and eerie shadows.
In a brief yet effervescent moment they paused as if fixated on some distant unknown cry, time enough to capture the magic.
Amongst Shona and Tswana storytellers Sable are often
regarded as regal black warriors admired for their dark cloak and fearless defenses.
They are a living symbol of dignity, balance and fearless strength.
Their mythology points to guardianship, liminality and regal authority, as though its spiraled horns gather unseen forces and its blackened coat absorbs mysteries.
