In a place humans call Tuli Block in Botswana…
… our ancestral homeland
The ground is hot beneath our feet, it’s dust clinging, rising, wrapping us in the taste of stone and dryness.
The Mopane forests sigh brittle songs around us as my calf presses close to my legs, his small trunk brushing against me in trust.
I feel my small herds thirst as I feel my own, beating inside us, a bond as deep as blood.
Emerging at last into the clearing, our family bunched tight.
Ahead lies the water, its scent an oasis.
It drives us forward under the relentless heat.
This image of a small elephant family in the peak of dry season invites one into their world and evokes all the emotions we humans feel when surrounded by our own loved ones. Our knowledge and understanding of wildlife as sentient beings widens the dialogue of man’s custodianship of nature based on mutual respect filled with possibility.
